Difference between rotary pouch packing machine and vertical packing machine

In the packaging industry, pre-made pouch packaging machines and vertical form-fill-seal (VFFS) machines are both very common pieces of equipment. When purchasing, businesses often face a dilemma: should they choose a pre-made pouch machine or a vertical packaging machine? Today, let's discuss the differences between these two types of equipment to help you make a better decision.

First, the packaging methods differ. A vertical packaging machine uses roll film to form bags on the fly—packaging film is fed from a roll, and the machine forms, fills, and seals the bags in one continuous process. In other words, the packaging bag is produced by the machine itself. A pre-made pouch packaging machine, on the other hand, uses pre-made pouches—pouches that are prepared in advance—and the machine is only responsible for opening the pouch, filling it with product, and sealing it. This is the most fundamental difference between the two.

Second, the packaging results differ. Because a pre-made pouch machine uses pre-made pouches, the bag quality is generally better and the printing is more refined, resulting in a higher-end appearance for the packaged product. Moreover, pre-made pouches come in a wide variety of styles, including spouted pouches, zipper pouches, stand-up pouches, and shaped pouches, offering a broader range of options. In contrast, a vertical packaging machine produces bags on-site, so the bag styles are relatively simpler—mainly three-side-seal bags, center-seal bags, and four-side-seal bags—with a comparatively lower packaging grade.

Third, the packaging speeds differ. Generally speaking, vertical packaging machines are faster. Because they operate continuously—forming, filling, and sealing simultaneously—their speed can reach over a hundred packages per minute or even faster. A pre-made pouch machine, due to the steps involved of feeding pouches and opening them, operates at a relatively slower pace—typically a few dozen packages per minute. Of course, this is not absolute; the actual speed also depends on the equipment configuration and model.

Fourth, the packaging costs differ. A vertical packaging machine uses roll film, so the material cost is relatively low, and there is no bag-making cost. A pre-made pouch machine uses pre-made pouches, so the cost of the pouches themselves is relatively high, especially for special-shaped pouches, which are even more expensive. Therefore, from a packaging cost perspective, vertical packaging machines have the advantage.

Fifth, the applicable ranges differ. Vertical packaging machines are suitable for high-volume products with moderate packaging appearance requirements, such as snacks, condiments, and laundry detergent powder. Pre-made pouch machines are suitable for products with high packaging appearance standards and high added value, such as nuts, dried fruits, pet food, and health supplements. Additionally, pre-made pouch machines are ideal for packaging special pouch styles such as zipper pouches and spouted pouches, which are difficult for vertical packaging machines to achieve.

Sixth, the equipment prices differ. Generally speaking, pre-made pouch packaging machines are more expensive than vertical packaging machines. This is because pre-made pouch machines have a more complex structure, requiring pouch-feeding and pouch-opening mechanisms, and involve higher technical content. Of course, the specific price depends on factors such as equipment configuration and brand.

In summary, pre-made pouch packaging machines and vertical packaging machines each have their own advantages. There is no definitive "better" choice—only what is more suitable. When purchasing, businesses should consider factors such as product characteristics, production volume requirements, and budget. If you prioritize packaging appearance and pouch-style variety, choose a pre-made pouch packaging machine; if you prioritize speed and low cost, choose a vertical packaging machine. Choosing what suits you best is the optimal decision.
